The best drones with thermal cameras for different use cases
Aerial thermography is everyday work in inspection, security and rescue. What matters is not “any thermal drone”, but the fit of sensor resolution, platform and mission profile.
This guide places four common DJI setups — and gives buying criteria so you avoid the wrong investment.
Quick decision
| Your focus | Typical choice |
|---|---|
| Entry / mixed missions | DJI Mavic 3T |
| Harsh outdoor conditions | DJI Matrice 30T |
| Survey + payload swap | DJI Matrice 350 RTK (+ payload) |
| Detail inspection with zoom + radiometric | Zenmuse H20T on a Matrice platform |
1. DJI Mavic 3T — the all-rounder
Guide price: from about EUR 5,400 incl. VAT
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| RGB sensor | 1/2″ CMOS, 12 MP |
| Thermal | 640×512 px |
| Max. flight time | up to ~45 minutes |
| Profile | compact, fast to deploy |
When you choose it: mixed day missions, PV roofs, fawn rescue, first professional thermography steps.
Limit: in continuous rain, very harsh sites or heavy payloads, prefer the Matrice class.
2. DJI Matrice 30T — for rough environments
Guide price: about EUR 9,300 incl. VAT
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | ~3.77 kg |
| Ingress | IP55 |
| Cameras | wide, zoom, infrared |
| Extra | laser rangefinder |
When you choose it: emergency services, industrial sites, bad weather — when robustness beats miniature size.
3. DJI Matrice 350 RTK — precise platform
Guide price: about EUR 9,500 incl. VAT (without all payloads)
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Max. flight time | up to ~55 minutes (config dependent) |
| Link | long-range system stack |
| Strength | RTK, payload swap, repeatable missions |
When you choose it: survey, recurring inspection routes, dock/enterprise workflows. Thermal performance depends heavily on the chosen payload.
4. Zenmuse H20T — detail inspection
Guide price: about EUR 11,900 incl. VAT (payload)
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Zoom | 20 MP |
| Wide | 12 MP |
| Thermal | 640×512 (radiometric) |
| Laser | up to ~1,200 m |
When you choose it: lines, towers, plants — when you need zoom, laser measure and radiometric thermography in one gimbal.
Buying criteria that actually matter
- Thermal resolution — 640×512 is often the floor you should plan for in pro work.
- Radiometry — do you need temperature values (e.g. PV), or is a relative heat picture enough?
- Flight time and reserve — plan reserve for transit, hover and abort.
- IP rating / environment — rain, dust, cold change the platform choice.
- Workflow — how do data reach your ticket system / command post / CMS?
- Training — a sensor without trained interpretation creates false confidence.
Typical use cases
| Domain | Value of thermography |
|---|---|
| Photovoltaics | Hotspots, string faults, soiled modules |
| Wind | Rotor/structure alongside optical checks |
| Emergency / SAR | Person search, fire seats, night picture |
| Building / roof | Moisture, thermal bridges, damage patterns |
| Fawn rescue | Location before mowing |
| Perimeter / security | Area anomalies (with clear legal basis) |
Permits and privacy — short
Thermal flights over homes and sensitive sites need a clear legal framing (category, consents, operating authorisation). Privacy applies in parallel: thermography can contain personal or security-relevant information. Plan both before serial operations — GDDC supports ConOps/SORA and training.
GDDC thermography training
Four-day course focused on:
- Basics of thermal image analysis
- Practice (incl. PV)
- Emissivity and measurement optimisation
- Thermography from the drone perspective
Guide: EUR 2,150 incl. VAT per person — current dates via Academy or consultation.
FAQ
Which thermal drone fits as an entry?
For many teams the Mavic 3T — if mission profile and weather allow.
Is “thermal” enough without radiometry?
For relative pictures often yes. For measuring PV/industry statements you need radiometric sensors and method.
May you fly with a camera over third-party property?
Only within the allowed legal frame and with required clearances. Without framing you risk aviation-law and privacy breaches.
