What is the open category?
The open category (OPEN) covers low-risk flights under EU Regulation 2019/947. Requirements:
- Drone with CE marking (class C0–C4)
- Flight within line of sight (VLOS) below 120 m altitude
- Compliance with sub-category A1, A2 or A3 (distances to people and settlements)
- Registration as an operator with the LBA (from C1)
- Liability insurance and the appropriate remote pilot competency (A1/A3, A2 or STS)
When is OPEN no longer sufficient?
As soon as your scenario requires BVLOS, heavier systems, a populated environment or recurring automation, you move into the specific category — from SAIL I–II or higher. Use the permit finder for an initial assessment.
